About the Event
Title: Advocating with Equity: Intercultural Competence and Socioeconomic Awareness in CASA Volunteer
Every child deserves an advocate who sees their full humanity and understands the complex systems shaping their lives. This interactive session explores diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) through the lens of socioeconomic realities and intercultural competence.
CASA volunteers will examine how class, culture, and personal background influence advocacy and decision-making. Participants will learn to recognize the impact of poverty, bias, and systemic inequities on families involved in the child welfare system, and to strengthen their cultural humility and cultural responsiveness when supporting children and families. Through reflection, discussion, and practical scenarios, volunteers will leave equipped to advocate more effectively—with empathy, dignity, and respect for the diverse experiences of the children and families they serve.
